Study "Reveals" New Moms Find The First Year Incredibly Difficult

“More than half of new mothers suffer a major knock in confidence in the first year because they suddenly realize they have no idea what they're doing"

Having a new baby can be a real shock to the system. Your drastically changed waist line is just about the only thing that has the potential to go back to its previous self (mind you, I’m still waiting for that to happen). But when it comes to sleep and life style and social life and a feeling of control over your daily happenings, well, there is no ‘nine months up nine months down’ time frame. Reality is, the minute you have a little life to care for, nothing in your own will ever be the same.

According to a not-so-eye opening study out of the UK, feeling overwhelmed by the first year of parenthood is a pretty wide-spread feeling.

Shocking.

“The average first-time mother finds the first year of her baby's life 'chaotic', 'tiring' and 'stressful', it was revealed today,” UK publication the Daily Mail reported.

I don’t know about it JUST being revealed. I’m pretty sure that comes as news to no parent.

“A detailed study into the trials and tribulations of becoming a parent found most mums find the initial 12 months emotionally and physically draining.”

Again, shocking.

The article goes on to list a litany of not-so surprising statistics. Among them:

“More than half of new mothers suffer a major knock in confidence in the first year because they suddenly realise they have no idea what they're doing.

It also emerged many mothers would be far happier to have a manual, more help, or instructions on how to cope with certain aspects of motherhood.

Half of those polled wished someone could explain why babies cry, and 43 per cent said they would have liked help on how to deal with sleepless night.

Two-thirds of those polled found it difficult to cope with the sleep deprivation.”

I would love to know where the half of new moms are getting their confidence, feeling of being well rested and in control are. Maybe they can write that manual so many of us wish we had.

The study, conducted by pain relief medication Nurofen For Children, also looked into the confidence level in parents when it comes to knowing whether or not a child is sick or just grumpy, and found that, again, no surprise here, parents often felt like a fish out of water.

“Dr McKenna, a spokeswoman for Nurofen for Children, added: 'When it comes to health advice, only a quarter of mothers feel comfortable sharing advice with other mothers on knowing when to query things with a doctor, and even less feel comfortable advising how to recognise when a baby was ill, or when it's appropriate to administer medicines,” the Daily Mail reported.

None of these findings are particularly earth shattering but they do tell new moms who feel alone, confused and exhausted that they are not alone and are in fact are more typical than not.

New moms can never have too much reassurance that they are not losing their minds.
