Why You Should Have More Sex When You’re Pregnant

While you might not feel like your sexiest self, sex during pregnancy is good for you and baby

When you’re pregnant you do a lot of things solely to keep your baby-to-be safe. You cut out sushi; you take prenatal vitamins; you avoid hot tubs and rollercoasters; you let your roots grow out. We don’t always want to give up sushi or hair dye or high heels, but we do it for the safety of our little one.

Well, you can file this under “great news for pregnant women”, everybody: sex during pregnancy is good for you and for your baby.

Yes! Sure you can’t take a relaxing dip in a hot tub, but you can (and should) have as much sex as you want!

So you should be having lots of post-conception sex, but you aren’t are you? A new survey by What To Expect found that 50% of first time moms and 75% of first time dads are nervous about having sex while pregnant. Couples who had sex 2-3 times a week before dropped to less than once a week during their nine month journey to becoming parents.

Ouch.

So, what are we so nervous about? The number one fear is that sex will hurt the baby. How many times have you heard in a movie or show, “But I might hit the baby”? Reality check, the uterus is sealed so sex will not cause any discomfort for the baby and you most certainly will not “hit” the baby. We also worry about preterm labour and the possibility of infection, which are two completely unfounded fears.

Maybe you’re still feeling a bit nervous. Or maybe you just don’t feel sexy while pregnant. Fair enough (but just so you know, we think you look AMAZING!). But maybe if we share some of the amazing benefits you and your baby will enjoy if you up your sexual activity during pregnancy, you’ll be more inclined.

Let’s talk about the glorious benefits of post-conception sex.

The best orgasms ever. The good news just keeps coming. The increased blood flow brought on by pregnancy intensifies your desire and, in turn, your orgasms.

Lowers your blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to preeclampsia, so blood pressure lowering sex is good for you and baby.

Boosts happiness. When you orgasm, endorphins are released. And while you are pregnant, your endorphins will make you and baby happier.

Burns calories. Staying physically active while you’re pregnant is very important. So why not have some fun and burn calories too? 30 minutes of sex burns 50 calories.

Reduces pain. Orgasms release the “love hormone” oxytocin, which has been found to increase your pain tolerance by 74%.

Increases intimacy. That same amazing hormone, oxytocin, is also linked to romantic attachment.

Boosts immunity. Fight of infections with IgA, an antibody that helps fight colds and increases with sex.

Improves sleep. Remember how you were afraid of hurting baby? The rocking motion of sex actually lulls baby to sleep and the relaxation will help you fall asleep too.

Speeds up postpartum recovery. When you orgasm during pregnancy, it prepares your pelvic floor for childbirth. And this, in turn, speeds up postpartum recovery.

Have we convinced you yet? Good! Go have some fun!
