Parenting Tips from Ben and Jessica Mulroney

With three kids under three, Ben and Jessica have learned a thing or two about raising happy children

It has been four months since the birth of their daughter, Ivy, and Ben (host of E-Talk) and Jessica Mulroney show no signs of slowing down. With three-year-old twin boys already at home, the Mulroney's have learned a thing or two about raising happy children.

Keep Older Kids Involved

It is important to make sure your kids don’t feel left out of the loop when a new addition to the family is on the way. “We had them suggest baby names. Some of them were a little out there. Captain America was one of them,” says Ben. “But they felt involved. They felt like we were asking their opinion and they were giving it.”

Jessica also suggests getting you older children a gift “from” their new sibling. “One thing that really worked well, was when she was born, we bought a present for Brian and John and said it was from her. We said, Ivy is here, and she wanted to give you a present. We just got them a little something. But I think that that made a difference a little bit because they were like oh, we get something too, and it’s not just about her.”

Use Brands You Trust

Ben and Jessica have recently become Pampers parents, and will be chronicling daughter Ivy’s first year of life, as well as blogging about the experience for Pampers’ new campaign, My Pampers Journey. They have been using Pampers since the twins were born, and Jessica says “it was the brand the hospital used, so we were automatically aligned with them. And the boys went through every phase of diaper, until now, they are at their last phase, Easy Ups. And it just worked for us. So when this opportunity came about, to align ourselves with this product, and to also chronicle Ivy’s life, her first year, it made sense. Pampers is one of the few brands we can really depend on.”

They also credit Pampers with a better night’s sleep for the entire family, because when the baby sleeps well, so does everyone else. “The other night, Ivy slept 12 hours, and the diaper held up. And if it wasn’t for that, maybe she doesn’t sleep 12 hours, maybe she sleeps 8 hours,” says Ben.

Pampers diapers are now 3 times drier than ordinary diapers, which can only be a good thing for your baby’s comfort and overall mood.  “There is very little that parents can control. You can’t control tantrums, you can’t control night terrors, and you can’t control illness. But you can control the products you use, and you can control the comfort level of your children,” adds Jessica.

Of their Pampers affiliation, Ben says “There is no such thing as a couple that can do it all themselves. So, find the help you trust.”

Trust Your Own Experience

Some of the best advice Ben and Jessica have ever gotten about being parents is to not dwell too much on how other people are doing things.  “I think some great advice we got was to not necessarily listen to other people’s advice. Everybody has their own style, everybody’s baby is different. Everybody feels differently about working and parenting. So whatever your decision is and however you choose to lead your life is your business,” says Jessica.

Focus on the Positive and Enjoy Every Moment

As busy as it is having three kids, Ben and Jessica advocate spending quality time with your kids, and taking the time to appreciate each milestone. “There might be a tendency to overanalyze your situation versus other people’s situation, and then you miss the joy of the moment, because you are worried about the next moment. And that’s why we’re having fun with Pampers, because they are giving us the opportunity to chronicle these moments,” says Ben.
